Triphala!
The Story:
Triphala, formulated by Ayurvedic physicians thousands of years ago
and used by literally billions of people since,
is considered the most effective and safest laxative and colon tonic
by most health care practitioners.
Where other colon formulas are depleting,
Triphala is mild, non-habit forming, and a rejuvenative.
The Herbs:
Triphala ( trifala ) is so effective because its three herbs are potent
healers
Amalaki, Emblica Officinalis, one of Ayurveda's greatest rejuvenators
and a strong natural anti-oxidant,
also helps to boost the immune system. Balances Pitta.
Haritaki, Terminalia Chebula, the Tibetan "king of medicine",
a classic heart-brain-longevity tonic,
is often depicted in the extended palm of the Buddha. Balances
Vata.
Bibhitaki, Terminalia Belerica, a powerful rejuvenative that
reduces liver and heart disease,
also improves the voice, vision and promotes the growth of hair. Balances
Kapha.

Ravi and Prashanti near Chitrakut with the three fruits of Triphala. Ravi holds Amalaki (Amla), in my left hand is Haritaki, the king of medicine in the Tibetan tradition, and in my right is Bibhitaki.
The reason why I recommend Triphala from Organic India is not just because it is Organic and sustainably wild-crafted and Fair trade, but also because the processing is the most responsible that I know of. For instance, traditionally you use the fruit pulp of the three Triphala fruits, which accounts for about 30% of the fruit, and not the seeds, which are about 70% of the fruit. The reason for this is that the seeds are toxic. Most companies though just grind up the entire fruit and sell that as Triphala, but that makes their product only 30% Triphala and 70% toxic seeds. Organic India goes the extra mile and uses only the fruit pulp from wild forest Amla, Bibhitaki and Haritaki trees. And they take very good care of the Tribal people (Santal) who harvest the Triphala. Many companies also use fruits that are not fresh and hence you get a dark colored powder, like the dark of an apple that has been sliced open. Good quality Triphala should be very light colored, with a slight yellow and greenish tinge. The yellow is from the Haritaki and the green is from the Amalaki. Another point is that the wild fruits are much more potent than cultivated fruits. Organic India only uses wild fruits and generously supports/trains thousands of Tribals to harvest them responsibly. Also, Organic India puts 108 capules in their glass bottles, not the typical 60 or 90, so you get a much greater value as well. Ask your supplier about these concerns.
